The Chimera of Reason - Doug Edwards

Artist Reception: Thursday, March 1, 2018 | 5:30-7:30pm

Doug Edwards presents a collection of his mixed-media works created using subconscious mark-making. Edwards' surrealist automatisms begin by applying ink, graphite and paint without a pre-determined end in site. He then revisits these forms and consciously adds selected objects from his daily existence. Edwards describes these compositions as refletions of himself and his being: "I am both a rational observer and unwittingly subject to the pressures of a half-forgotten past."

Exposed - Ana Guitierrez

Artist Reception: Thursday, March 1, 2018 | 5:30-7:30pm

Ana Guitierrez's interest in reflections began the minute she set foot in San Francisco. The abstract parallel space demanded her atttention, which resulted in her photographic series, Exposed. These images of women gazing through shop windows plays with both physical and metaphorical windows. As Guitierrez describes: "The metaphor of the window was emphasized by the eyes and, by introducing them, I included myself. According to Jacques Lacan, the human being's subjectivity is determined through a gaze which places the subject under observation, causing the subject to experience themselves as an object which is seen. Hence, every time I was discovered, my vulnerability was exposed while becoming part of those worlds."
